Men are from Mars, women are from Venus - especially when it comes to aesthetic procedures

Why is there a difference in what procedures men and women want?

A survey conducted by Yoots found that a non-surgical nose job was the cosmetic procedure which males most wanted to have. With 63% of respondents choosing this treatment. The second most popular choice was to not have any sort of procedure done at all, 23% of respondents said this.

The majority of female respondents wanted lip fillers with 76% wanting to plump up their pout. No female participants responded with ‘none’ or ‘n/a’ when asked which cosmetic procedure they would consider having.

Abigail Reynolds has lip fillers and thinks this difference could be due to stereotypes about male and female beauty. She says: “Men tend to focus on bone structure and definition to look more masculine. Women want to soften certain parts of their faces but enlarge other parts like their lips.”

Tiana Grano, a social media influencer who had a non-surgical nose job, also thinks societal expectations influence this. She says: “some people follow social standards as its implanted in our system to do so. Social media has helped to enhance the idea of beauty but has also distorted it.”

There is crossover in what both sexes want in terms of these procedures. Reynolds thinks this is true for anti-ageing treatments. She says: “Men and women want to hide the effects of ageing. I think Botox is more common with women but is gaining popularity with men.” The survey found similar results as Botox was the third most popular choice for male respondents, with 11% wanting it.

With aesthetic procedures becoming more common, there may be a greater similarity in what men and women want over time.
